In B2B, the best pricing story is rarely “we cost less.” More often, it is “we’re worth the difference.” That’s where marketing plays a role.
In B2B markets, buyers rarely judge our price in a vacuum. Academics say that it’s judged against the next plausible option, along with the level of risk the buyers feel, the effort they expect and the confidence they have that we will deliver. That means our job is not just to present a number. It is to make the difference between us and the alternative feel worth paying for.
If we talk as if price should be explained by cost, we are wrong. Buyers are not paying for our internal workings. They are paying for an outcome. Where marketing comes in is to make the value clearer.
Too often we jump to the number before we have understood the stakes. Good marketing should help sales arrive already knowing what the buyer wants to achieve. Price then lands inside a much stronger story.
The broader lesson is that marketing should not be defending a price after it has been established. It should help create the conditions in which that price feels fair and even reassuring.
