As Google automates more, advertisers have fewer levers. Page speed, clarity, differentiation and mobile experience matter more than ever.
PPC search advertising is still the fastest way to buy attention. However, the moment the visitor lands, the clock starts ticking. If the page disappoints, the ad did its job but the website wasted it.
This matters more now because with Google Ads being increasingly ‘helpful’, there are fewer elements we fully control. The biggest is the landing experience.
Not a small leak
Speed is one point of failure. Mobile users are especially unforgiving. Google has cited research that suggests 53% of mobile visits are abandoned if a page takes longer than three seconds to load. That is not a small leak.
Then there is mismatch. A good ad makes a promise. If the landing page starts with generic waffle, the visitor has to connect the dots. Most will not. The page needs to reinforce the ad’s claim quickly.
Frozen in time
Sometimes older landing pages drift away from the market. The offer changes, the language changes, but the page stays frozen. That is enough to flatten conversion rate, even when the traffic is well matched.
Proof is another missing piece. In B2B, the landing page has to reduce uncertainty. If the page gives no reason to believe, the ad is effectively sending people to a shrug.
We get the blame
Mobile usability is the final trap. Many PPC clicks are mobile. A form that is fiddly, a page that jumps around as it loads, or a cookie banner that blocks the CTA can undo everything. The visitor does not blame the cookie banner. They blame us.
So we need to treat landing page quality as a prerequisite, not an optimisation task we tack on later. Does it load fast? Does it match the ad promise? Does it prove anything? Does it feel current? Does it work cleanly on a phone? We should always check whether the page deserves the traffic before we pay for it.
