The next phase of marketing isn’t about buying the biggest platform. It’s about being smarter with the data we already have.
Single ‘all-in-one marketing platforms’ – for years we’ve been told that they can do everything from email and analytics to ads and automation. But for the businesses that invested in them, this has rarely been achieved. The tools are complex, expensive, and (surveys show) only half-used. Even at the big enterprise users.
What appears to be replacing them is a shift in thinking. I’m reading reports that the companies leading the way are building their own setup from smaller, flexible tools that all connect to the same pool of data. It’s called ‘data-first’, and it means we hold and own the data, not the software vendor. That data then becomes the foundation for everything from email targeting to Ai-driven recommendations.
The point is that Ai only works if the data underneath it is clean and available. The movement away from big ‘marketing clouds’ is really about control. For smaller businesses, this means keeping customer details tidy in one place, using tools that can share data easily, and avoid being locked into anything that can’t be adapted later.
The next phase of marketing isn’t about buying the biggest platform. It’s about being smarter with the data we already have. The capabilities of data analysis and marketing tools to come are unknown, but we can prepare for them now.
