A PPC strategy we may be overlooking

A PPC account should reflect business structure, not just keywords. Here’s how alignment drives better ROI, clarity, and decision-making.

Organising a Google Ads campaign around how a business actually operates can offer a lot of advantages. That’s the argument put forward in a great article called Why Your PPC Structure Should Mirror Your Business Model on Search Engine Land.

Most accounts have been built up over the years from a series of keywords, and this is an understandable approach, both for those learning how to manage their own campaigns and for agencies trying to get to grips with what clients actually want. However, building campaigns around regions, product lines or service offerings could possibly offer clearer insights, better budget allocation, and more meaningful performance tracking.

Rather than keyword research, the author recommends starting with questions about revenue drivers, margin differences, sales cycles, audience segments and regional operations. These insights can be used to shape campaign architecture from the outset.

Even complex existing accounts may be worth reconsidering, if it’s not easy to map advertising performance back to business priorities. Other signs to look at include constantly having to build workaround reports, budget shifts feeling reactive, and performance having inexplicably plateaued.
