Is all SEO becoming defensive?

Growth is getting harder. If you’re only measuring SEO by how fast your traffic grows, you’re missing half the picture.

When most of us think of SEO, we imagine climbing the rankings. But with Ai-powered ‘overviews’ and zero-click results rocketing in significance, hanging on to the visibility we already have is just as important as chasing new gains.

With nearly 60% of Google searches ending without a click, growth is getting harder. Without actively investing in SEO, we’re probably slipping backwards.

Some of the most critical SEO tasks have always been defensive anyway. Updating sitemaps and checking canonical tags won’t lead to a traffic spike, but they protect us from serious setbacks.

Finally, don’t forget that if a brand starts to lose search traffic associated with its name, SEO is not to blame. It can only soften the blow with more non-branded traffic. So, if you’re only measuring SEO by how fast your traffic grows, you’re missing half the picture.
