With so much more of our content being read on mobile devices, more – and shorter – paragraphs are worth considering.
The house style for a newspaper I once worked on was ‘a new paragraph for every new sentence’.
It took some getting used to as a writer and editor.
But somehow, it worked.
Paragraphs were never over-long, and short sentences jumped out of the page to make their point more forcefully.
The concept could only be effective because the columns were quite narrow.
But today, with so much more of our content being read on mobile devices, we read more than ever in narrow columns.
‘A new paragraph for every new sentence’ is still pretty radical.
But more – and shorter – paragraphs are worth considering.
