It’s easy to speculate about how this sort of word salad comes out of the corporate think wok. But at least have a go.

As a magazine editor, I never stopped disliking the standardisation of press releases from US companies, which always have the same format for the first sentence:

"Badiddlyboing, Odawidaho, Nov.4, 2024 -- The Blue Widget Corp., a leader in the provision of advanced widgeting products, announces that..."

This hardly grabs the editor’s attention, does it? I guess it’s supposed to ensure that the company gets to ‘introduce’ itself to newbies. However, if that’s the intention, I’ve seen some fantastic examples of dropping the ball there. Indeed, just last week I read one where the company described itself in a press release opening sentence as “a global provider of enabling technologies that transform our world”.

It’s easy to speculate about how this sort of word salad comes out of the corporate think wok. A holding company has taken over a sufficient number of disparate brands that it’s beyond their imagination to describe properly what they do in a single short phrase – or at least beyond that of senior management’s approval process.

But at least have a go.
