Don’t hide those new web pages away

It’s not unusual for website owners to get a little frustrated that their lovely shiny new announcement doesn’t appear in search engine results straight away …or even in a few days. This is not just down to the frequency at which the search engines get around to ‘crawling’ the website, but also whether they get to the new page itself. So what can we do about that?

Naturally, it’s better if the search engine crawlers, like Googlebot, come round as often as possible. The way to do this is to have a site that’s got lots of authority – such as through having a lot of external links – and is updated often. If our site doesn’t tick those boxes, it’s going to be hard.

However, improving that is a longer-term project. We’re impatient for results now, I’m sure. And my best advice? Ensure that the new page is as easy to find as possible.

So ensure that wherever Googlebot goes on the site, its chances of seeing a link to the new page are high. That’s one benefit of having links in the footer to “latest additions to the site”, as so many sites do. It puts the link everywhere. And if we can get a prominent link on the home page as well, at least for a week or two, even better.
