I was asked the other day if the new Google Analytics 4 needs to be set up for traffic which needs to be manually ‘tagged’, such as emails. Fortunately there’s nothing specific to do – if whatever we did in the current ‘Universal Analytics’ is still functioning, then everything should be fine. The old “utm” tags are recorded just as before.
To see the source and medium of traffic in GA4, go to Reports > Acquisition > Traffic Acquisition and select “Session Source/Medium” as the primary dimension. Anyone having used the campaign utm tag can add a secondary dimension by clicking the “+” and selecting “Session Campaign” under “Traffic Source” as the secondary dimension. Otherwise, selecting “Session Source” and “Session Medium” as separate dimensions can look neat, like this:
