Here’s a good article on writing style which I appreciated recently. Write Like You Talk: 12 Tips for Conversational Content from the Content Marketing Institute describes conversational content as “the antidote to monotone content.”
Now, this is not always an appropriate tone of voice. But for a lot of marketing communications, it’s not only desirable, it’s much underused. All writing should be a conversation with the reader, and unless it’s a formal statement, most of us could do with making that conversation a bit more personal.
Suggestions include asking engaging questions, using short sentences, avoiding complex words, harmonising your sentences, using more italics and bold text, not being scared of contractions and ‘exuding personality’. It’s well worth a read.
