You probably think that your company’s social media efforts are worth drawing attention to – that’s why you’ve put links to them on the home page of your website. But have you considered what those links do? Yes, they send people away from your site.
So why would you put them front and centre, as almost the first thing people see?
I reckon up to a quarter of business websites do this. It doesn’t make a lot of sense to me. Nobody’s going to follow you on Twitter or LinkedIn until you’ve shown them something relevant or interesting, so the sensible place for links to your social media accounts is at the end of every piece of content.
It’s what the ‘footer’ was designed for.
