This one’s for the Google Search geeks, but a fascinating article last month called How Google Search Ranking Works – Darwinism in Search on Search Engine Journal has had me thinking. It gives an insight into the complexity of how search engines rank pages in their results, and suggests that we need to cover every ranking factor if we’re going to score well. Fail on one factor (such as page speed) and it could make everything else irrelevant. Interestingly, the article speculates that Google’s ‘own’ search results page elements (such as ‘featured snippet’ panels) have to compete in just the same way as standard results. It’s worth a read if you’re interested in that sort of thing.
