Most of us are in denial about our website’s speed of response. It’s something which is considered to be out of our hands, or too technical for us to understand how to fix. Consequently, many sites can easily take 5 to 10 seconds to load for the first time, and that’s just too long. Click on a Google link, and if you’re not seeing a site almost instantly, you’ve got to have a really strong desire to see it, not to hit the ‘back’ button before anything appears.
Perhaps the best tool for analysing our sites’ performance is GTmetrix. The best thing about this is not the amazingly detailed reporting from several sources, but the huge number of recommendations which are available if you dig down. If you’ve got a problem and you can’t sort things out yourself, find somebody who can. Have fun.
