If you’re unfamiliar with the concept of a machine-readable (“XML”) sitemap, it’s worth reading about, because every website should have one. I wrote about it here last year. But just having a sitemap isn’t enough – it needs to be up-to-date, and you shouldn’t take things for granted.
There are two things you need to look at, to check. Firstly, do you see the latest additions to your website featured in the sitemap? Secondly, is it providing good clean links to pages which still exist?
Obviously a quick look at the sitemap (and a knowledge of the latest additions to your website!) will tell you if it’s being updated. To assess the quality, however, you’ll need to run a proper “crawl” of the sitemap, checking all the links. If you’re one of our clients, just drop us an email and we’ll take a look for you.
In the meantime, here’s that previous article again.
