Description meta tags, or “meta descriptions”, can be one of the most neglected parts of SEO. There have been misconceptions over the years that they don’t have any effect any more; after all, Google itself says: “We don’t use the description meta tag in our ranking”. But if the description meta tag is used in the Google results (and it often is), then a good one will increase your clickthrough rate. And apart from the extra traffic that will bring, better clickthrough rates mean higher positions.
