Too many fields is just bad form

Yesterday I mentioned infographics, and here’s an excellent example, but this time relating to online marketing. It comes from Eloqua, and shows the results of some research into the optimal number of fields on a web form. Long-time readers will know how much I hate unnecessarily long forms (do you really need somebody’s phone number to email them something?), and the results here show that every field you remove from your form will increase the response rate. The trend is incontrovertible: 1 field (presumably an email address) got an average of over 55% completion, whereas by the time we’re up to 9 fields, the average is down to just over 35%.
