What does social media say about your company?

I’d like to add one thing to the comment I made yesterday about ways to ensure that you look like a proper, professional business from the outset. And it’s to do with social media. Several companies have said to me that it’s not worth them having a Twitter account or a Facebook page because they wouldn’t update them often, and anyway, they doubt anyone would follow them. That’s not necessarily the point. One great benefit from social media is that it says: “We’re in business”. Sure, prospects new to the company probably aren’t going to rush to follow you on Twitter. But the fact you have a Twitter account, and a small badge in the corner of your home page saying “Follow us on Twitter”, instantly (and perhaps subconsciously) confirms to your prospects that they haven’t arrived on the web page of a company which went bust in 2003.
