Here’s a really interesting technique you might like to try if you’re in the unfortunate position of having the wrong page on your website being displayed in Google for a specific search term. For example, you might have a brilliantly-designed page about your blue widgets, created especially for the first-time visitor, which explains why your products would be so useful and offering to send a brochure immediately. You might find you’re on the first page of the Google results (excellent!) …but the page Google is linking to is merely a data sheet, and on an obsolete product too. That’s not where you want first-time visitors to go.
The first thing to try is to improve the standing of the proper blue widget landing page. This will involve on-page search engine optimisation (see previous articles) and setting up both internal and external links to suggest to Google that it’s not pointing to the best possible page. This suggests that you rename the page which is appearing in the Google results, and redirect the old page URL to your proper landing page. The link strength of the old page should be redirected to the new landing page, so as long as the on-page SEO is at least as good as the old page you’ve renamed, there’s no reason why this shouldn’t work well.
