Description meta tags are important

Description meta tags, or “meta descriptions”, can be one of the most neglected parts of SEO. There have been misconceptions over the years that they don’t have any effect any more; after all, Google itself says: “We don’t use the description meta tag in our ranking”. But if the description meta tag is used in the Google results (and it often is), then a good one will increase your clickthrough rate. And apart from the extra traffic that will bring, better clickthrough rates mean higher positions.

Anyway, there’s no need for me to go any further. How To Write A Meta Description That Gets Click-Throughs by Neil Patel, on Search Engine Land, expresses these thoughts eloquently and in detail, and had me nodding my head all the way through. Do have a read.

I have improved websites rankings by just changing their meta titles and descriptions. It’s about getting a mix of keywords and still getting a tantalising message to your prospects. Not easy with the limited number of characters!
