Make a note of this, everyone! Last week, I mentioned my distaste for badly-chosen drop down menus, and cited the most obvious example, the huge "country selector" box. Well, some wonderful people have been working on an alternative, which has just been unveiled by Smashing Magazine. The article "Redesigning the Country Selector" gives the full technical background on the thought processes behind what they've come up with, but you may wish to skip straight to the demo. It's really nice to use, and what's more, the code has been made open source, so anybody can incorporate it into their website. All you have to do is to forward this to your website designer/manager, and say "implement this please on the following forms". Then sit back and feel good about making the web just that tiny bit easier to use.
